Title:
""From packets to services: what the Future Internet should really do (and be)"

Abstract

In the last years there have been several proposals suggesting the need for a radical change into the Internet design. Keywords like .clean slate design. and .disruptive research. have been widely popular in the networking research community, in opposition to the traditional, incremental approach to innovation into architectures and protocols. However, very few concrete results have emerged from such declarations of intent.

In this talk, after a brief introduction on what the Future Internet should do in terms of services offered to applications and users, I will present a possible architectural model that we believe might answer to several of the requests that are arising from the current scenarios. This model, that we have called Service Switching, is based on the assumption that scalability, flexibility and resiliency will be the critical requirements that users and service providers will demand for the Internet of the Future. To support our approach I will present two applications areas where we are currently investigating: large scale distributed conferencing and content delivery.
