IEEE/ACM DS-RT 2006

DS-RT 2006 Message from General Co-Chairs

Welcome to the 2006 International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real-Time Applications (DS-RT 2006), held this year in Torremolinos, Spain. This nice city is quite close to Málaga, both located near the Mediterranean sea. Málaga and the nearby locations in Andalucía like Granada, Córdoba and Sevilla are very old places enriched by the crossover of numerous cultures that left behind them a nice historical heritage during more than 2,700 years. Because of the magnificent natural parks and beaches of the whole coast, Málaga grew with a vocation for tourism, and in the last decades Torremolinos has been the focus of attention from the whole world as a destination for vacations. Visitors can profit from the sun and the beach most of the year, and also look for their preferred tour, either cultural, environmental or gastronomic (having "tapas" is a must!). The services sector and the technological park (and the location itself) are now attracting modern companies and also people from around the world that set their final residence in this place. Hence, Torremolinos is a good point to start knowing Andalucía and Spain.

This year DS-RT again received a large number of submissions and continues to be a leading symposium in its research area. We are delighted that Steve Benford and Lin Uhrmacher have accepted our invitations and will provide keynote talks at the symposium. This year is special as we celebrate the tenth conference in the DS-RT series. For those interested in the history of DS-RT, the previous events were held as follows:

DiS-RT ‘97, Eliat, Israel, January 9-10, 1997
DiS-RT ‘98, Montreal, Canada, July 19-20,1998
DiS-RT ‘99, Greenbelt, Maryland, USA, October 22-23, 1999
DS-RT 2000, San Francisco, California, USA, August 24-26, 2000
DS-RT 2001, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, August 13-15, 2001
DS-RT 2002, Forth Worth, Texas, USA, October 11-13, 2002
DS-RT 2003, Delft, The Netherlands, October 23-25, 2003
DS-RT 2004, Budapest, Hungary, October 21-23, 2004
DS-RT 2005, Montréal, Canada, October 10-12, 2005

We would like to thank all members of the organizing committee who have contributed in many different ways to the success of this year’s symposium. We are particularly grateful to David Roberts and Simon Taylor, the Program Co-Chairs, for their work in organizing the technical program, Azzedine Boukerche, our Steering Committee Chair, Luciano Bononi, our Webmaster, and Mirela Notare, our Publicity Chair. We would also like to give special thanks to the program committee and outside reviewers, who provided high quality reviews of the many submissions. Finally, we owe a special debt to Stephanie Kawada and the editorial staff at IEEE Computer Society Press for their work in producing these proceedings to a very tight schedule.

Enjoy the symposium and enjoy Spain!

DS-RT 2006 Message from Program Co-Chairs

Welcome to the Tenth IEEE International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real-Time Applications!

This is a special year as it represents our first major anniversary. Ten years has seen an abundance of contributions
in the fields represented by our conference, particularly in distributed simulation and collaborative virtual environments. This year's symposium is no exception. DS-RT 2006 provides an excellent forum in which academic researchers and practitioners in industry and defense can meet to discuss issues and challenges related to this interdisciplinary
research area.
We hope that we have arranged an even more exciting program this year, with two keynote speakers who are prominent in their research areas: Steve Benford, Professor of Collaborative Computing at the University of Nottingham, UK, and Adelinde Uhrmacher, Head of the Modeling and Simulation Group at the University of Rostock, Germany.
The symposium papers fit within the general themes of large-scale simulation, collaborative virtual environments, and real-time applications. At a lower level of abstraction, the sessions comprise papers concerning applications and technologies of Grid and Web Services, Interest Management and Group Communication, Time Management, Peer-to-Peer networks, Collaborative Virtual Environments, Steering and Scenario Generation, Capture and Backup, and Interoperability and Reusability.

This year we will again award a Best Paper at the symposium. After the reviews of all papers were received, a
subcommittee was formed and the following papers were nominated:

Causality and Proactive Cancellation
Chetlur, M. and Wilsey, P. A.
Comparison of Head Gaze and Head and Eye Gaze within an Immersive Environment
Murray, N. and Roberts, D.
Grid-Enabling FIRST: Speeding Up Simulation Applications Using WinGrid
Mustafee, N., Alstad, A., Larsen, B., Taylor, S.J.E. and Ladbrook, J.
Proximity-Aware Synchronization within Federation Communities
Okutanoglu, A. and Bozyigit, M.

The winner of this year’s Best Paper award will be announced at the Symposium dinner. On behalf of the DS-RT
2005 Program Co-Chairs, David Roberts and Georgios Theodoropoulos, we are delighted to confirm that the
winner of the DS-RT 2005 Best Paper was:

3D Mesh Compression Using an Efficient Neighborhood-Based Segmentation
Chen, L. and Georganas, N.D.

On behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has contributed
toward the success of this symposium. In addition to our main sponsor, IEEE Computer Society, we would like to
acknowledge support from ACM SIGSIM. Thanks are also due to Stephanie Kawada and the IEEE Computer
Society Conference Publishing Services
for their work in producing the proceedings, and the Program Committee and reviewers for returning their reviews in time to meet our deadlines.

We hope you enjoy the symposium and we wish you a pleasant stay in Torremolinos!
