Short Biography

firefox-gray Marco Di Felice received his Bachelor Degree (summa cum Laude) and Master Degree (summa cum Laude) in Computer Science respectively in 2002 and 2004, both from the University of Bologna, Italy. From August 2007 to December 2007 and April 2008 to August 2008 he was a visiting researcher at the Broadband Wireless Networking Laboratory, School of Electrical and Computer Engeneering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Ian Akyildiz In April 2008, he received his PhD degree in Computer Science, from the University of Bologna. Italy. His PhD thesis addressed cross-layer optimizations for multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks. From September to December 2009, he was a visiting researcher at the Northeastern University, Boston, USA. Since March 2022, he is Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Bologna, where he is the Founder and co-Director of the IoT PRISM Research Laboratory, addressing scientific and industrial research on pervasive and mobile systems. He is faculty member of the the international PhD program in Engineering and Information Technology for Structural and Environmental Monitoring and Risk Management" (EIT4SEMM), and affiliated to the Advanced Research Center on Electronics Systems "Ercole De Castro" (ARCES) of the University of Bologna.

He authored more than 140 international journal and conference Publications on Wireless and Mobile systems, protocols, modeling and simulation. In 2012, his paper: "DySCO: A DYnamic Spectrum and COntention Control Framework for Enhanced Broadcast Communication in Vehicular Networks" received the Best Paper Award at the 10th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access (MOBIWAC 2012). In 2013, his paper: "Re-establishing Network Connectivity in Post-Disaster Scenarios Through Mobile Cognitive Radio Networks" received the Best Paper Award at the 12th IEEE Mediterranean Ad Hoc Networking Workshop (IEEE Med-Hoc-Net 2013). In 2019, his paper: "BEE-DRONES: Energy-efficient Data Collection on Wake-Up Radio-based Wireless Sensor Networks" received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE INFOCOM Workshop on Hot Topics in Social and Mobile Connected Smart Objects (IEEE HotSALSA 2019).

He is Associate Editor of the IEEE Internet of Things Journal, of the MDPI Drones journal, of the Ad Hoc Network journal (Elsevier, from 2014 to 2021) and member of the technical committee of Computer Communications journal (Elsevier). He has been General Chair of the IFIP WWIC 2019 conference, and Program Chair of the IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (IEEE CCNC 2022), of the IFIP 16th International Conference on Wired/Wireless Internet Communications (IFIP WWIC 2018), of the 2019 5th IEEE International Symposium on Measurements and Networking (IEEE M&N 2019), of the IEEE International Workshop on Mission-Oriented Wireless Sensor, UAV and Robot Networking (IEEE MiSARN 2019), of the the IEEE International Workshop on Wireless Sensor, Robot and UAV Networks (IEEE WiSARN 2018, IEEE WiSARN 2020, IEEE WiSARN 2021), of the International Workshop on Emerging COgnitive Radio Applications and aLgorithms (IEEE CORAL 2012, IEEE CORAL 2013, IEEE CORAL 2015, IEEE CORAL 2016), of the First International Workshop on Self-Organizing Wireless Access Networks for Smart CITY (IEEE SWANSITY 2014), and Vice Program Chair of the IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (IEEE CCNC 2021) Also, he has been Track Chair of the IEEE CCNC 2020 (IoT enabling technologies track) and of the IEEE VTC-Fall 2015 (Next generation wireless networks track). He served as Program Committee (PC) member in more than 50 international conferences and workshops. He joint the following national and European research projects: PRIN 2006 NADIR, PRIN 2009 STEM-NET, ARTEMIS Internet-of-Energy (IoE), ARTEMIS Arrowhead, H2020 EU-BR SWAMP, Artemis H2020 Arrowhead Tools (UNIBO Leader) , AlmaIdea Senior BEE-DRONES (Principal Investigator) BRIC 2018 MAC4PRO (WP Leader).

He supervised more than 150 master's and bachelor's thesis for the Degree on Computer Science and on Business Informatics at the University of Bologna. In 2022, he is teaching the following courses: Database systems (bachelor degree on Business Informatics), Context-aware systems (Master degree on Computer Science), Internet of Things (Master degree on Computer Science), Data Analytics (Master degree on Computer Science). Also, he is co-lecturer of the course Things that Compute and Interact for the Master in Digital Technology Management organized by the Bologna Business School.

His recent research interests include: the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Web of Things (IoT), IoT edge/cloud architectures and monitoring systems, robotic wireless networks and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), self-organizing and AI-driven wireless systems, sensory data analytics, context-aware, mobile and edge computing, indoor localization and mobile services.
